This was my first introduction to Shantae after taking an interest in Wayforward after hecamazing Ducktales Remastered. I just wanted to know if this was my new favorite company and they are. I’m a Shantae fan.
The story goes is Shantae hears a voice one night that leads her to a trapdoor in her Uncle Mimic’s house. She’s warned of impending doom when she wakes up. Come to find out, her Uncle Mimic built a device called The Dynamo to protect Scuttle Town but when her nemesis Risky Boots invade, Shantae beats her and her slug but that isn’t enough for the mayor. He ends up firing her as a genie protector until she discovers there are still missing parts for the Dynamo so Shantae goes out to find them.
Her main form of attack is her hair. She can also transform into different animals like a monkey, a crab to reach places underwater, a mouse to go through small spaces, and a bat to cross long gaps. She can also use magic abilities like knives surrounding her like a shield.
Of course, the graphics are simply amazing. It’s Wayforward, they always impress. The main highlight in this game are the bosses. You got a giant slug, a giant one eyed centipede and probably the best boss in the game: Giga Mermaid. She reminds me of Medusa from Cuphead.
The soundtrack is once again done by the amazing Jake Kaufman. This is the guy who composed for Ducktales Remastered and Shovel Knights and he did an amazing job here.
There is also DLC which is supposed to be in the perspective of the nemesis Risky Boots. I have never played this as I’m not a huge fan of DLC but the option is there in case anyone is interested.
Shantae is an amazing game with glorious graphics and animation and a great soundtrack to boot. With several stages from inside factories, magic carpet riding and battling on huge battleships, this is a game that will last you a few hours. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, everyone won and it not only turned out to be a great game but the series is still continuing as of this writing. For a great franchise that is a little different from the norm, check out the Shantae series.
