Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017) follows an artistic girl’s coming of age story in Sacramento, California. Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson is a high school senior trying to figure out what she wants to do in life, and what college to attend. The relationship between her and her mother, played by Laurie Metcalf, is continuously strained due to the standards of her mother. Her father is out of a job and the family is struggling. Though the story seems incredibly traditional, the film is a wonderful account of growing up and appreciating what you have. |

I never thought this movie would get this popular. The Room is regarded as the Citizen Kane of bad movies and rightfully so. It's a work of genius actually. I wish I thought of it. It would take a completely inept and warped mind to come up with that. The Disaster Artist is about the making of that film and how two friends, Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero (James and Dave Franco) going for their dreams of making it big. The film starts off in a play. Greg totally bombs for a lack of self confidence and soon discovers Tommy Wiseau. His performance isn't good, but that wasn't what attracts Greg. Tommy doesn't care if he is loud and makes a fool of himself and soon proves that when the two of them rehearse at a local restaurant. As the two bond, they decide to go to Los Angeles to break their way into Hollywood. They find an agent and try their best to find gigs. When that doesn't work out, they get an idea.... make their own movie and this is where The Room comes in and all the follies that follow. Tommy gets a big head right off the bat with money that nobody knows where he got it from. After all, this is Tommy's universe. He's also belligerent towards the cast and crew, and even to his best friend Greg and there were times where I wanted to punch Tommy in the mouth. One thing this movie fails to acknowledge, though, is that The Room didn't get recognition right off the bat. It took a few screenings before that happened. What made the success skyrocket whether Tommy Wiseau wants to admit it or not, was the internet. If it wasn't for the people he shunned like Obscurus Lupa or Nostalgia Critic, he wouldn't have all these people discovering it. There was actually more behind the scenes that happened, and I hope that there are is an extended cut on DVD and Blu-Ray. The Disaster Artist is a great film. I personally enjoyed James Franco's performance as Tommy Wiseau. At times, I even forgot it was James Franco performing it. He truly deserves a nomination. His brother, Dave, did a great job but I can't help but think that he looks too much like his brother. Seth Rogen is in this (of course) and I can tell he is having a blast with his role. I would too. Unfortunately for The Disaster Artist, Star Wars comes out this weekend. I will be seeing that. If you can't get into Star Wars and you need to see a movie, check this movie out. If you hadn't heard of The Room, you really should. It's celebrated for a reason.
